Module 01

Crossing the Road

Safe crossing is more than remembering a rule. It means pausing, noticing what traffic is doing and choosing only when the situation is safe.

Your crossing routine

This is a learning routine—not a law. Pause at every step and use what you notice.

A rule or signal can say it is your turn, but you still need to make sure traffic has stopped and it is safe.

Notice before you move

Build the whole picture

01 · Stop, look, listen and think before you cross—and stay alert as you cross.

Stop before entering the road, look all around and listen; cross only when there is a safe gap, and keep looking and listening while crossing.

02 · Use a crossing when you can, but still check the traffic yourself.

Use a designated crossing when one is available and still look in both directions before stepping into the road.

03 · A crossing does not make traffic disappear. Wait until it is safe.

Before stepping onto a crossing, take account of approaching vehicles and do not proceed until there is a safe opportunity.

04 · If a parked vehicle blocks the view, find a clearer place to cross.

Avoid crossing between parked vehicles where possible; choose a place where you can see traffic and drivers can see you.

05 · Phone down. Head up. Give the road your attention.

Put the phone away and stay focused near traffic, continuing to look and listen while crossing.

06 · A signal can say it is your turn; you still check that traffic has stopped.

At a signal-controlled crossing, follow the pedestrian signal and check that traffic has stopped before crossing.
